She’s never sliced a pineapple until
This bluebottle afternoon. The crown
of blades and coat of pleated spines
weaponizes it’s otherwise
innocent flesh. He sets the three-pound
grenade on the table
before running to his next interview.
Renegade to surprise, she avoids
rusted telephone poles
so the loose staples and tacks
can’t cut open her skin. Now, kitchen
knife steady in hand, she cuts off a
piece of skin. Jackpot inside,
no check needed, the sticky, stingingly
sweet flesh pays for all injuries.
